18 June, 2013: Kingston’s Whig Standard comes to visit Island Radio! Patrick Kennedy from the Whig spent some time putting together this great character piece on our great community radio station. Billed as the smallest radio station in Canada, the article gives insight into the strong dedication of the volunteers and supporters that have kept this fun and diverse radio station alive for so many years. 13 June, 2013: Megan Joslin from Patchwork Gardens made an appearance on Shannon’s Mixed Tape to chat about community supported farming. Megan was really happy to be on the island!

8 June, 2013: On May 27th, the grand prize winner for the pair STING concert tickets was announced on the Udder Morning Show. The lucky winner was Diane Pearce, Stella, Ontario. Congratulations to Diane and thank you to everyone who participated in this raffle to raise funds for the radio station.

5 June, 2013: We are growing again! The newest member of the volunteer team at CJAI is Derek Wagar. He’s a main-lander with a passion for music. Platooning on a bi-weekly basis the Wednesday evening time slot with fellow Kingstonian Shannon Myra, host of Shannon’s Mixed Tape, Derek will be bringing you exciting rock and roll music and commentary every second Wednesday. 28 May, 2013: The radio station is still busy this week despite the completion of the 2013 Annual Fund Drive. This week involves collecting many pledge monies, prize winners retrieving their winnings, and organizing delivery of some of the auction items. - Thursday’s end-of-day total was $6,460 in pledges and end-of-week auction bids.
- Friday’s end-of-week total was a record setting $8,690 in pledges and end of week auction bids.
That’s an increase of $2,230 due to Friday’s ‘touch down’ efforts. Everyone is a bit speechless at how wonderful this total is. It sets a new record when compared to last year’s record setting total of $7,700. Thank you everyone for sustaining your independent community radio station for another year!

19 May, 2013: CJAI 92.1 FM has been on the air for 7 years, but we don’t really know much about our listeners and their preferences. We want to change that. We want to know your opinion and we need your help in shaping how CJAI grows in the future. We have launched a short Listener Survey online so that you can contribute your ideas to the station, and you will be eligible to win a $100 prepaid VISA Gift Card! Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into the draw and the winner will be announced June 10th, 2013. The winner will be contacted by telephone or email, and the winner’s name will be posted on the CJAI website.

7 March, 2013: Last week students in the IMC@SLC Dual Credit Program at St. Lawrence College visited Larry Jensen, host of the Friday Morning Show at CJAI, and were tasked with creating commercials for a CJAI sponsor (Loyalist Cove Marina) as part of an advertising and communications project. The projects are in! Four groups have each produced a 30-second commercial. Have a listen to each one and then take a moment to help the students by voting for which commercial you think is the best.

9 March, 2013: Terry Culbert broadcasted his last morning show on Thursday March 7th. After over 350 shows on Island Radio, Terry has left his mark. During his time on Amherst Island, the contributions that Terry made to his community and to the radio station were immense. He will be dearly missed.

5 March, 2013: Terry Culbert has set two records on CJAI Island Radio: the longest and shortest running programs. The retired television news journalist hosted the Friday Morning Show for 342 editions as well as Thursdays @ Eight for 10 editions.

February 27, 2013: Welcome Dan Simpson as Island Radio’s newest morning host with a Thursday program called THE ISLAND SUNRISE SHOW. From 7 to 9am, the beef-farming-country-singer, will entertain listeners with good old country, bluegrass and a bit of rock n’ roll. Dan’s first show will air on Thursday, March 14th.


February 15, 2013: Joe Coté, a long time friend of Ron Rochester, has written a lovely article for Toronto’s Globe and Mail newspaper that showcases the life of Ron and his contribution to broadcasting in Canada. Ron was the former chair of the Board of Directors of CJAI and everyone at the station, and in the community, miss Ron dearly. February 7, 2013: Bath resident and long time listener to Island Radio, Jim Bedford, made his way from the mainland to sit in with Terry Culbert on Thursdays @ Eight this morning. Jim loves 50′s and 60′s rock n’ roll and has a great knowledge of those times. This was his second LIVE guest appearance on the show.

January 24, 2013 – Terry Culbert, Island Radio’s assistant station manager and host of Thursdays @ Eight, was guest speaker at Prince Edward County Radio Corporation’s AGM last evening in Picton. CJPE 92.3FM hopes to be on air by the summer of 2014. Their purpose is to fund and operate a not-for-profit community radio station that reflects and enhances the richness, diversity and economic vitality of Prince Edward County.

January 4, 2013 @ 8:07am – Larry Jensen, hosting his first Friday Morning Show today. Larry takes over the longest running show on Island Radio from Terry Culbert after Culbert completed 342 editions in the past six and a half years. We’re looking forward to Larry broadcasting for the next six years or so.

December 19, 2012 – At a recent gathering of the Kingston & District Old Tyme Fiddlers Association, president Glenn Morris, on the right, presented Ellis Wolfreys of the Wolf’s Den with a donation for CJAI Radio. The Fiddlers Association thanked Ellis for all he does fostering Country and Bluegrass music.
December 17, 2012 – Friday Morning Show host Terry Culbert was asked to MC the Kingston Senior Choristers ‘Season of Dreams’ which took place December 14th and 16th. As a thank you from the choir, Terry was presented with a generous donation cheque made out to CJAI Radio.


December 16, 2012 – Terry Sprague of Big Island, Prince Edward County, was a guest on the Udder Morning Show on December 10th. Terry Sprague is an author, columnist, naturalist, broadcaster and retired farmer. One of the many topics discussed was his recently released book: Up Before Five – The Family Farm. (Terry’s life growing up in The County).
They also chatted about Terry’s fascination with the Main Duck Islands, situated to the south of Amherst Island. Terry hosts excursions during the summer to the Main Ducks, telling visitors of its history and former owners, one of which was a colourful character named Claude “King” Cole. Cole raised cattle, horses and buffalo on the Main Ducks. He may also have been a rum runner during prohibition.
Following the broadcast, the show’s hosts and Terry Sprague attended breakfast at the home of Barbara Filson, a niece of Claude ‘King’ Cole. Barbara Filson presented Terry with a hammer, which belonged to her uncle, bearing his name on the handle.

December 11, 2012 – Ron Rochester, broadcaster and president of CJAI Radio’s Board of Directors, died suddenly on Monday, December 10, 2012. A huge loss to his wife Margaret and his friends at Island Radio. Funeral services will be held in Napanee at 1pm, Friday, December 14th at the Catholic Church (West and Thomas Streets). Reception to follow service.

December 7, 2012 Larry Jensen joined Terry Culbert today as co-host of the Friday Morning Show. Larry and his wife Sherri recently purchased a home at the head of Amherst Island, moving here from Oakville, Ontario. Welcome to Island Radio Larry! Will the lads rename it the Terry & Larry Show? Stay tuned.

November 21, 2012 – Murray Shields founder and organizer of Authentic Canadian Tours brought two dozen Toronto area visitors to Amherst Island on Saturday, November 17th. This is Authentic Canadian Tours third island visit and one of their destinations is ISLAND RADIO. CJAI thanks them for their generous donation.


November 21, 2012 – Keith ‘Doc Luv’ Miller of the Up Steve’s Sleeves show was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, November 15th at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee. Scott Reid, Member of Parliament for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington presented the medal. Keith received the award for his long history of concerning himself with the welfare and prosperity of his community and has promoted many farming and other causes with local and higher levels of government. He is a patient teacher who has personally instructed many on conservation-conscious disposal of waste.

November 12, 2012 – Braden Dragomir, a CKWS Television News journalist, visited the Wolf’s Den recently and his story will air Tuesday, November 20th @ 6pm. Host Ellis Wolfreys and his LIVE guests Anne Banks and Red Neck Blvd. are featured.


October 27, 2012 – Wallace Edwards, Canadian children’s illustrator and winner of the 2002 Governor General’s Award for his book Alphabeasts, will be Terry Culbert’s guest at 9am, Friday, November 2nd on the Friday Morning Show. The Yarker resident will be promoting his latest book: Uncle Wally’s Old Brown Shoe. Wallace Edwards book launch and opening reception is Saturday, December 1st at the Ingram Gallery, 49 Avenue Road in Toronto.

October 21, 2012 – UP STEVE’S SLEEVES is going from early morning LIVE to evening LIVE 7pm to 9pm beginning Tuesday, October 23rd. The repeat will play Tuesday mornings from 6 to 8am the following week. Steve Kennedy and his co-host Keith ‘Doc Luv’ Miller are looking forward to being able to sleep in on those cold winter mornings. By the way, Up Steve’s Sleeves is probably the only radio show to be exclusively sponsored by a sheep farm … Amherst Island’s Foot Flats Farm.

October 21, 2012 – New Country singer-songwriter Rob Carnegie was a guest on the Friday Morning Show, October 19th. Kingston-born Carnegie spent several years in Nashville, Tennessee building his career and has opened for some of the best Canadian country stars including: George Canyon, Gord Bamford and Dean Brody. Rob Carnegie is also the Director Tourism Marketing & Development for the City of Kingston.
October 21, 2012 – Independent country singer-songwriter Jamie Spurvey of Brighton, Ontario, was Ellis Wolfreys guest for three hours on the Wolf’s Den, October 10th. The 22-year old Newfoundland native has performed at the Havelock Jamboree, the Emerald Music Festival and on Island Radio. His debut country album is called ‘Take it all’.

[Saturday, October 13, 2012] – CJAI 92.1 FM was truly touched to receive a very substantial donation this week. Scott Jackson, former employee at Kingston’s CKLC 1380 AM, has made a $1,000 donation to CJAI to help keep our community radio station running. Now the president and founder of LIFE 100.3 FM Ontario’s Christian Superstation in Barrie, Ontario, Scott hopes that this donation will encourage others to support and invest in their community. Thank you Scott for this wonderful and generous donation.
[Saturday, October 6, 2012] – Keith ‘Doc Luv’ Miller of the Up Steeve’s Show, with his acrylic painting titled: Summer on Amherst Island whilst driving my John Deere tractor. Keith gave his creation to The Lodge during their All-Island Artists Show as a fund raiser for CJAI Island Radio. The painting fetched $230 dollars. Thank you Keith and thanks also to The Lodge for donating the entire amount to our radio station.

Amherst Island, lovingly referred to as ‘Pie Island’, has an amazing number of great cooks and periodically they become guests on the show.
